Prosper Portland is awarding $1.49 million in Community Livability Grants for fiscal year 2018-19 to 23 projects in five urban renewal areas or neighborhoods — and five of those are in Lents!
The goal of the Community Livability Grant (CLG) program is to foster vibrant and healthy neighborhoods and improve the prosperity of area residents and businesses.
One of the largest projects to be funded in Lents is a partnership between the Lents Neighborhood Association and the Seventh-Day Adventist Church to make $30,000-worth of improvements to the Lents Activity Center. The Activity Center currently houses monthly community meetings and events, such as neighborhood association general membership meetings and the Community Clothing Closet. The money will go toward facility improvements, such as upgrading the existing lighting system to energy efficient, long-lasting LED technology and fixing the doors so that the Activity Center can be used more efficiently by more people.
“We are grateful to be able to bring this money to Lents and hope this success will energize and inspire others here to dream up their own projects and partner with us to make them happen, knowing that funding is possible for work that benefits our community,” said Lents Neighborhood Association Chair Sabina Urdes.
Other projects in Lents that have received funding from Prosper Portland: Junior Achievement Exterior Improvement Project ($45,500), Rose CDC’s 91st Ave Street Mural ($9,500), White Phoenix Acupuncture’s Safety, Comfort, and Visibility Project ($18,143), and Wisdom of Elders’ Workforce Development Initiative ($30,000).
Another area in East Portland receiving Community Livability Grant money from Prosper Portland is Gateway: $15,000 for the creation of a District Asset Map; $200,000 for Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization’s Africa House; and $300,000 for DePaul Treatment Center’s Campaign for Hope & Recovery.

Ever wonder what the heck are these Neighborhood Associations? What is the Lents Neighborhood Association Board, and what do I need to know to decide whether to run for office in the upcoming election September 25th?
The Lents Neighborhood Association invites the community to bring your questions and curiosity to our informational event, August 30, 2018 at 6:30 PM. We will meet at the new Asian Health and Service Center, 9035 SE Foster Rd, Portland, OR. Paul Leistner, Neighborhood Program Coordinator for the City’s Office of Community & Civic Life, will share with us his experience and knowledge, including but not limited to:
History and development of the LNA;
What it has been and what it could be;
Opportunities, resources and limitations of being a city-linked association;
the LNA Board;
Info to make smart decisions about running for an open board position at the Annual Meeting on September 25th.
It’s time for all of us to come together to learn the nitty gritty about our Neighborhood Association and how each of us can contribute to livability in Lents and progress via the LNA. We encourage all LNA members who care about the well-being of Lents to join your neighbors at this meeting.
If you’d like to help out, please meet us at the McDonald’s at 5613 SE 82nd Avenue (avoid parking in their parking lot) for a light breakfast and quick training. After the training, we will begin the clean-up on 82nd Avenue. In teams, we will work our way on both sides of SE 82nd Avenue to pick up trash and paint over graffiti.
At the end of the clean-up, we will celebrate all the great work with a free lunch for all volunteers at a central location.

The Neighborhood “Dumpster” Clean Up is a partnership between the Lents Neighborhood Association and the Lents Neighborhood Livability Association, and it will take place on June 16, 2018 from 9 AM to 1 PM, at 5050 SE 82nd Avenue, in the parking lot of the Adult & Teen Challenge Thrift Store.
Two, 30-yard dumpsters will be available for community members to dispose of bulky items or yard waste that won’t fit into regular garbage cans.
Unacceptable Items include the following:
• E-waste (TV’s, computers and computer monitors)
• Hazardous materials (i.e., paint, pesticides, chemicals, asbestos…)
• Toxic substances (fertilizers, creosote, pool supplies…)
• Pollutants and contaminants
• Infections waste, medical waste or radioactive waste as defined by applicable federal, state or local laws or regulations.
• All demotion and remodel debris must be accompanied with asbestos clearance paperwork from a certified asbestos abatement company. This is required for all structures from all years of construction.
Please sort carefully through the items you’ll be dumping to make sure there aren’t any small recyclables that might be better taken elsewhere so that we keep them out of the landfill. Here are Portland’s curbside recycling guidelines.
The Lents Neighborhood Association board will meet in Executive Session on Wednesday, May 30th, 2018, starting at 7 PM, at Leander Court, 4620 SE 122nd Avenue, to deliberate toward a decision on recent grievances.
Even though the executive session is closed to the public, the Board’s findings shall be a matter of public record.
We now have a newsletter that we’ll be sending out twice a month: once right after a General Membership Meeting (to recap major decisions/action items, approved minutes, and committee reports) and a second time ahead of the next General Membership Meeting, to share draft minutes from the previous meeting and agenda for future one.
