Jo Ann Hardesty coming to Lents to discuss Street Response: Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2020, 7:00 pm

The Lents Neighborhood Association is proud to announce that Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty will be joining us at our general membership meeting on Tuesday, January 28, starting at 7:00 o’clock in the evening to discuss Street Response, a pilot program launching exclusively in Lents this Spring, that is about responding to low-risk 911 calls involving people who are homeless, such as calls about people who are intoxicated or need someone to check on their health or welfare. Instead of using a police officer, the team will consist of an emergency medical services specialist and a crisis worker.

According to a report, officials considered starting the street response program downtown, but felt it was too big of a geographical area. They said focusing on Lents allows the team to work in a smaller area and address the needs of people who are further away from services.

Along with the Commissioner, we will also be joined by Kaia Sand, executive director of Street Roots, an organization that’s been at the forefront of launching Street Response and Firefighter Tremaine Clayton, the manager of Portland Fire & Rescue’s Community Health Assessment Team (CHAT), who will be directly involved with Street Response in Lents.

Join us to hear directly from the Commissioner, Street Roots, and hopefully Portland Fire about what Street Response is all about and bring your questions for them!

Our other topic of discussion is Prosper Portland’s budget for Lents for fiscal year 2020/2021. We will be joined by Thea Munchel from Prosper Portland who will give a presentation and be prepared to answer your questions.

We will also be discussing an upcoming training for neighborhood association board members and general members that our neighborhood association is sponsoring.

And we will vote on a candidate for the Land Use Chair on the Lents Neighborhood Association board.

Open positions:

Chair – 2-year term

Vice-Chair – 1-year term 

Secretary – 1-year term

Treasurer – 1-year term

Land Use Chair – 2-year term

Transportation Chair – 1-year term

At Large seats – three 1-year terms; two 2-year terms

Eligibility:

To be eligible to run, you have to:
-Live in Lents
-Be at least 18 years old
-Be an LNA member (if you fulfill the above two conditions and you sign in on the night of the election, you can become a member)

Time commitment:

Board meetings: monthly, every 2nd Thursday of the month, 6:30-8:00 pm

General membership meetings: monthly, every 4th Tuesday, of the month, 7:00-8:30 pm

E-mail correspondence & setup/take down for meetings: 1-2 hours per month minimum

Optional: 

Committee meetings, if you choose to join or create one (once a month or less)

Events, if you choose to help organize or create one 

Board member training: TBD, via the district coalition office (East Portland Community Office)

How to run for a position on the board:

  1. E-mail lentsneighborhoodassociation@gmail.com with your intention to run by 5:00 pm on Friday, September 20, 2019, if you wish to be on the ballot. If you don’t request to be added to the ballot by the cut off date and still want to run for a position, you may also show up on the day of the election as a write-in. 
  2. Prepare a speech no longer than 3 minutes for election night, covering:
  • Your skills and experience that would prepare you for the positions for which you are running 
  • Why you are the best candidate for that position
  • Anything else you might like to say 

3. Optional: Let the community know that you are running ahead of time and invite them to show up and vote for you on election night. You may consider sharing your candidacy via social media (Facebook pages and groups, Twitter, NextDoor, etc..), e-mail, flyers on announcement boards (where permitted), in person, and more. If you’d like help with outreach, please let us know.
