Hi, everyone!

The Lents Neighborhood Association normally holds its elections for board positions on the 4th Tuesday of every September. This year, due to COVID-19 and wildfires, our board and general membership voted to delay the election by a month, to the 4th Tuesday in October. This means that this year, our election will be on Tuesday, October 27, 2020. At the general membership meeting on September 22, 2020, our membership voted on a new process for this Special Election (outlined below). Since we can’t meet in person like we used to but we still have to check voter eligibility, we’ve designed a drive/bike/walk through election process that will be conducted outside, in the parking lot of the Activity Center where we used to hold our general membership meetings, with proper COVID-19 safety protocols and social distancing in place.

This is new to all of us, so thank you for your patience as we try our best to make it work with the circumstances that we have and adjust along the way. Everyone on the board is a volunteer and doing our best to manage this process in addition to work, our families, our health, and the impacts of COVID-19. Rather than delaying the election until we are able to do it the old way, the majority of our current LNA board voted in favor of adapting to the current circumstances and worked hard to come up with a new process that would continue to empower us all to exercise our very important right to vote. Voting is a fundamental process in our democracy. During a time when many people are feeling discouraged by the national election, your local and neighborhood elections are ways you can make an impact in your community.  Whether you will run for a position or you will simply show up to vote in new people, please know that your participation is making an immediate impact. There is a lot of work that needs to be done in Lents and we need more folks to step up and help lead.

Lents 2020 Special Election process

Monday, Oct. 19: Deadline for candidates to submit bio, photo, and proof of eligibility if they wish to be added to the ballots by emailing us. See FAQs and #4 below for additional info.

Tuesday, Oct. 20: Deadline for the community to request accommodations (such as translation/interpretation and ADA accommodations) for Election Night.

Tuesday, Oct. 27: Election Day at the Lents Activity Center (8835 SE Woodstock Blvd), 4:30-7:00 PM.

Walk-in/Drive-through election:

  1. Point 1: Check in and show proof of Lents residency — OR — sign pledge that you live in Lents;
  2. Point 2: Receive ballot (candidate info and pen offered upon request)
  3. Point 3: Drop off filled out ballot

Election crew inside the Activity Center will count ballots. Results to be announced that night, if possible, or the next day.


  1. What LNA Board positions are currently open?

Open seats: Vice-President (2-year), Secretary (2-year), Transportation (2-year), Treasurer (2-year), Public Safety (2-year), three (2-year) at‐large seats; two (1-year) at‐large seats. For a description of each one, click here.

  1. Who is eligible to vote in the Lents Elections?

Voting is open only to LNA members. To be an LNA member, you have to fulfill all the following conditions: Live in Lents, own property in Lents, or own a business/operate a non-profit in Lents; be at least 18 years old; have signed in to at least one LNA meeting in the last two years (if you sign in on the night of the election, you can become a member and vote that night). Please see our Bylaws for additional details.

  1. Who is eligible to run for a position on the LNA Board?

To be an eligible candidate, you must fulfill all the conditions: Live in Lents, own property in Lents, or own a business in Lents; be at least 18 years old; be an LNA member (if you fulfill the previous two conditions and you sign in on the night of the election, you are eligible). Please see our Bylaws for additional details.

  1. What do I have to do if I want to run for a position on the LNA board?

Here is a candidate checklist, and if you have additional questions, email the current LNA President at Sabina.lents.na@gmail.com.

  1. E-mail the LNA President Sabina.lents.na@gmail.com with your intention to run, a photo (headshot), and personal bio by 4:00 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 19, 2020, if you wish to be on the ballot. She will follow up to verify eligibility. If you don’t request to be added to the ballot by the cut off date and still want to run for a position, folks may vote for you as a write-in on Election night.
  2. Prepare a speech no longer than 3 minutes for the Virtual Candidate Forum on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2020, covering:
  • Your skills and experience that would prepare you for the positions for which you are running
  • Why you are the best candidate for that position
  • Anything else you might like to say

    3. Optional: Let the community know that you are running ahead of time and invite them to show up to the Virtual Candidate Forum and to vote for you on election night. You may consider sharing your candidacy via social media (Facebook pages and groups, Twitter, NextDoor, etc.), e-mail, text, call, etc.. If you’d like help with promotion and outreach, please let us know.

5. Do I have to submit a photo and bio/intent to run if I want to run for a position?

If you don’t submit a photo and bio with an intent to run for a position, we won’t be able to verify your eligibility to run for a position and we won’t be able to add you to the balot. However, the ballots will also contain write-in options for each position, so folks may vote for you that way. If you do submit a photo, bio, and proof of eligibility to run for a position, we will help promote you via our website, social media, and other channels, in addition to adding your name to the ballot.

6. Is there an option to mail in ballots?

Unfortunately, due to restrictions we are facing, mailing ballots is not and option at this time.

7. I’ve decided to run for a position but the Oct. 19 deadline has passed. What can i do?

Folks may request to be added to the ballot after this date and closer to the election as well, and we encourage you to do so, but a shorter notice might impact our ability to fulfill your request (we are all volunteers), as well as give less time to the community to know that you are running. We will do our best to help candidates though in any way that we reasonably can, so email us if this comes up for you.

8. I’d like to request an accommodation but it’s after the Oct. 20 deadline. What can I do?

We will do our best to help in any way that we reasonably can, so email us if this comes up for you.

9. Who will be counting the ballots?

The ballots counting process will be supervised and conducted by two independent parties.

10. What’s your plan for keeping the community safe and prevent the spread of COVID-19 on election night?

We take our responsibility of keeping the community safe very seriously. Our COVID-19 health & safety guidelines include the following:

  • Temperature scan prior to beginning of shift for volunteers
  • Conducting the election outside
  • Distancing of 6 feet between community members, and no more than 9 people gathered at a time.
  • Drive/bike/walk through to prevent personal interactions beyond the proof of voter eligibility and ballot handout
  • Minimizing face-to-face engagement by doing most of the promotion online, having signs and informational pamphlets
  • Requiring masks and having masks available for volunteers and voters
  • Having a sanitizing station available for use at any time
  • Sanitizing pens in-between uses
  • Volunteers will wear gloves at all times.
  • Sealed individual water bottles for volunteers

11. This sounds like a lot of work. Do you need any help/volunteers?
